Description
The Shiloh Shepherd's overall appearance is rather heavy. The Back is broad, strong and solid. The head is broad and noble, slightly domed and in proportion to the body. The width and length of the skull are approximately equal with a gently defined stop, strong developed cheekbones, and a gradually tapering muzzle. The muzzle should be predominantly black, the length being equal to that of the forehead, with the lips firmly fitted and solid black. The muzzle should not be long, narrow, or snipey in appearance. Both upper and lower thighs are well muscled. The tail is quite long and thickly covered with dense hair hanging down like a plume. The coat comes in two varieties: smooth and plush. The plush coat is medium-length with a dense undercoat and has a distinct mane from the neck to the chest. Hair should not be more then 5 inches (12 cm) in length. The smooth coat is thick and medium-length with the outer hair being harsh to the touch.

Temperament
The Shiloh Shepherd although being similar to the German Shepherd in appearance has a more predictable temperament. Every litter of Shiloh puppies undergoes a ridged litter evaluation by an experienced impartial examiner. The ideal Shiloh is neither fearfully shy nor dominantly aggressive. An incredibly intelligent, courageous, and self-confident dog that willingly protects its family. They have a high learning ability, therefore should be trained and socialized from an early age. If a Shiloh has nothing to do or is bored, be assured this breed is no couch potato, he/she will invent something to do.

Height, Weight
Height: 28-30 inches (71-76 cm.)
Weight: Males: 100-140     Females: 90-130 pounds

Living Conditions
The Shiloh Shepherd will do okay in an apartment with enough exercise. They are relatively inactive indoors and do best with at least a large yard. It has an all-weather coat and will do well in cold as well as hot climates. They can live outdoors but would be much happier inside close to their owners. If outside during the summer months, please be sure they have plenty of water and shade.

Exercise
The Shiloh Shepherd loves strenuous activity, preferably combined with training of some kind, for these dogs are very intelligent and crave a good challenge.

Life Expectancy
About 10-14 years.

Grooming
The coat comes in two varieties, smooth and plush. The plush coat requires some brushing to keep it clean and tangle free while the smooth coat requires minimal grooming. A healthy diet is essential in maintaining a silky plush coat with a minimal amount of grooming.  This breed sheds bits of hair constantly and is a seasonally heavy shedder. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion.

Origin
Credit for four decades of breeding and development is due Tina Barber of New York State. Years of weeding out genetic faults, trial and error, have continued to strengthen hips and add more to a gentle sweet temperament.

Unfortunately disagreements with the original registry (ISSR) have resulted in many breeders leaving and forming a competing  registry. Our intention is solely oriented towards the continued nurturing and promotion of these Gentle Giants via providing an excellent home and producing the highest possible quality puppies exemplifying all the qualities of the incredible Shiloh Shepherd.

Atlantic Sable Shilohs simply wishes to be involved with people who want and expect the very best for the “good of the breed”. For this reason Atlantic Sable Shilohs has elected to be affiliated with NSBR (National Shiloh Breeders Registry) and ISSDC (International Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club)
